The 1,668 square foot cottage, like other structures on the property, contains a signature pattern of art glass as well as built-in planters to bring nature closer to the interior. The geometric, stylized plant-like forms of the windows contrast with the figurative wisteria designs found in the mosaic fireplace surround designed by Orlando Giannini, another of Wright’s frequent collaborators.

In 1967, the State University of New York at Buffalo purchased the Martin House for its president’s living quarters, and the then-provost bought the Barton House. The ambitious plans included demolishing the apartment buildings and reconstructing the pergola, the conservatory, and the carriage house. The MHRC also acquired the picturesque stucco-and-wood gardener’s cottage, which had belonged to other owners in the post-Martin years.
